Frances Folsom Cleveland, 1887-1892

Frances Folsom Cleveland (1864-1947) married President Grover Cleveland in 1886. She was the daughter of Cleveland’s law partner, Oscar Folsom. The Clevelands were good friends of the Richard W. Gilders, and visited the Gilders’ summer studio on Buzzards Bay, Cape Cod, where Saint-Gaudens modeled this portrait during the summer of 1887. It remained unfinished until cast in 1892.
