Mrs. Schuyler Van Rensselaer (Mariana Griswold), 1888

Mariana Griswold Van Rensselaer (1851-1934) has been described as the first American woman art historian. She was born in New York City, the daughter of George and Lydia Alley Griswold, and married Schuyler Van Rensselaer in 1873. Critic and author of a number of books and articles on art, her columns appeared in Scribner's Magazine, Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, and the New York Sun. She reviewed a number of Saint-Gaudens' works, including the Farragut Monument in 1881 and the Standing Lincoln in 1887.
