Helen Parrish Lee and Sarah Redwood Lee, 1881

Dr. Charles Carroll Lee (1839-1893) was born in Philadelphia, the son of John and Harriet Carroll Lee. In 1856 he graduated from Mount Saint Mary’s College, where John La Farge had been one of his classmates. He received his M.D. in 1859 and served as a surgeon in the Union army during the Civil War, afterwards moving to New York, where he continued to practice medicine. In 1863, he married Helen Parrish of Philadelphia, and they had five children, including Sarah Redwood, depicted here.
