Saint-Gaudens, 1877
by Will H. Low

Will Hicok Low (1853-1932), painter and illustrator, was born in Albany, NY.  He studied in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts.  Saint-Gaudens introduced himself to Low in Paris in 1877, and the two men became fast friends, Low assisting the sculptor to complete an altar piece commissioned for a New York church.  Like Saint-Gaudens, Low became one of the team of young artists who created decorative work for artist John LaFarge and architect H.H. Richardson. Low was also known for his critical essays and biographical books about nineteenth-century art and artists.
