Eli Bates Fountain, 1886-87

Eli Bates, a Chicago businessman, bequeathed a fund for the commissioning of this fountain and the Standing Lincoln, also in Lincoln Park, Chicago.  Saint-Gaudens received the commission in 1883. Frederick W. MacMonnies assisted him in modeling the figures. MacMonnies studied with Saint-Gaudens at the Art Students League in New York, and served as sculptural assistant from about 1880 to 1887. Saint-Gaudens considered MacMonnies to be his best pupil; MacMonnies would go on to his own successful career as sculptor. The figures for the fountain were cast by Henry-Bonnard Bronze Company, New York City.
