George Washington Inaugural Centennial Medal, 1889

The 1889 centennial of George Washington’s inauguration was marked by celebrations throughout the country. Saint-Gaudens was asked to design the medallion, his first. However, he was unable to give it his full attention, and gave the work to his assistant Philip Martiny (1858-1927) who actually created the models for the piece. Saint-Gaudens did not accept payment for the work. The medal was struck in silver and bronze, as well as in smaller ceremonial bronze badges.
