John Tuffs Portrait Cameo, circa 1861

John Tuffs, lawyer, died in 1859. This portrait was commissioned by his wife Hannah, who would commission her own cameo portrait, nine years later, from Saint-Gaudens in Rome. Saint-Gaudens worked from a photograph to create this likeness, possibly one of his first cameo portraits.
