General William T. Sherman, 1888

William Tecumseh Sherman (1820-1891) was born in Lancaster, Ohio, the son of Charles and Mary Hoyt Sherman. In 1840 he graduated from West Point and in 1850 married Ellen Ewing. Sherman was a Civil War leader, and he made general in 1869 when Grant was inaugurated president. He retired from active service in 1883 and moved to New York in 1886. This bust, modeled by Saint-Gaudens in 1888, took eighteen sittings to complete. This bust served as a study for the 1903 Sherman Monument.
