Birthplace of Augustus Saint-Gaudens
35 Charlemont Street, Dublin, Ireland

In search of work, Bernard Saint-Gaudens came to Ireland from his home town of Aspet in the south of France. While working in a Dublin shoe factory, he met Mary McGuiness. The two were married on October 17, 1841. The couple soon had two children, Louis and George, but both died prior to Augustus' birth on March 1, 1848. When Augustus was six months old, his family immigrated from Ireland to Boston aboard the Desdemona. The family soon settled in New York City, where Bernard found an eager market for his "French ladies boots and shoes."
